HEMINGWAY TEMPLE A.M.E CHURCH
" The Church Where Love Makes A Difference "
I have been serving as the Edna V. Davis missionary president for over 8 years. I am honored to be serving under the footsteps of those great women who came before me. I know that as a servant of God, and I consider it one of the greatest honors, is to humble myself and serve our Creator. We should be a testimony to others because we are missionaries.
Our society continues to carry on the great legacy at Hemingway Temple AME Church. The church "Where Loves Makes the Difference". Through the years we have keep up with the traditions that our ancestors started. Our Feeding Program, Clothing Ministry, Thanksgiving Baskets to families, Back-to-School Drive, and Angel Tree Projects continue to bless the church family, friends and the Shaw community.
Although we are still going through the Pandemic, it has not stopped our ability to give to our church and the community. We have found creative ways to serve the community. Through a partnership with Kar-ing House Wellness Ministries, we are able to address the needs of the homeless at the Mitch Snyder/2nd & D Streets Shelter. While volunteering at the shelter, we were featured in a television news interview. We celebrated with the Kar-ing House Wellness Ministries on their 1st anniversary. We have participated in the "Bread for the World" letter writing project, where we wrote letters to our Congressional Representatives, to ask them to put forth efforts to provide better food services for the country, We continue to deliver food boxes to families in need and also provide clothes through our Clothing Drive and Family Clothing Blessings. We donated to the Washington Conference-CCHA Baby Pampers Drive. SED stimulus gift cards were given to bless 7 families. We have also provided gifts, cards, and great conversations to the residents at Nursing homes. Gift cards were also given to the Central Union Mission. We donated Backpacks to the Gaywood Elementary School, in Lanham, MD; as well as the Shaw Community churches' Backpack Blessing event. We support Dollars for Missions, the Liberian Orphanage/Humanitarian Project, and the WMS Foundation. This year we participated in the "Celebrating Obama's 60th Birthday" event by donating toiletries to the Bowie Senior Center, in Bowie MD. We will continue to provide transportation for people in need of assistance in getting to the voting polls, work, doctor appointments, shopping, and going to get vaccines/COVID-19 testing. We will also continue the distribution of masks to our church family and the community; and making masks for our First Responders. In addition, we donate to the Catherine C. Hemingway Area Book Scholarship. As our Millennials/Generation Z are heading to college, the Legacy family of our missionary society provides the Davis/Washington Scholarships to our YPD'ers pursuing degrees at colleges/universities to achieve great goals in their lives.
Our current Dorcas Prince, King Michael Curry (age 10), participated in a Black Lives Matter March and was featured on the news. He told them that he wanted to be a Space Engineer and he received encouraging words and gifts from a NASA Astronaut. All of our YPD'ers were celebrated on our annual Youth Recognition Day. Our YPD'ers also participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring, the Penny Drive, Taking-It-to-the-Streets, and Virtual workshops. We have a new Associate Member, who attends the virtual men's meetings. Our new 2019-2021 Missionary members were presented at the Annual Conference during the virtual Capping/Pinning Service.
We believe in celebrations! We held virtual birthday parties for our wonderful Pastor and First Lady, Reverends Thann & Margaret Young, as well as the other ministerial staff. Our Annual day is the 4th Sunday of September. This will be a great celebration of our 2020-21 Victories in the Lord. We hold our Missionary meetings via Teleconferences; and attend all of the local, conference, and district missionary meetings. We believe that "Faith without Works is Dead", so we will continue to keep the faith and press on in the mission of giving to God's people
